A GTA Online ban is a Rockstar Games enforcement action that locks you out of GTA Online, either until a set date (a suspension) or with no end date at all (a permanent ban). Rockstar's Online Suspension and Ban Policy, last updated on February 24, 2026, adds a detail most guides skip: the action can land on your Rockstar Games account, on your gaming system, or on both.
That last part matters on PC. Since September 17, 2024, GTA Online on PC has run BattlEye, and Rockstar's own FAQ says it reads hardware identifiers such as serial numbers. Rockstar uses 2 kinds of penalty, and neither works quite the way older guides describe it.
What Gets You Banned in GTA Online
Rockstar bans GTA Online players for breaking its Terms of Service or Community Guidelines. Its support article on account suspensions spells out the common reasons:
- Modding in online games, including mod menus
- Exploiting or abusing game mechanics, such as money glitches
- Taking part in "money lobbies" or account boosting
- Paying for account "recovery" services
- Promoting glitches or modding of online games
- Manipulating protected game data and code
- Interfering with other players' gameplay
PC players also run into BattlEye. Rockstar says it uses BattlEye to catch cheating software that reaches GTA Online servers, attempts to tamper with protected game code, and sabotage of other players. A BattlEye finding can end in a suspension or a ban across Rockstar's games and services.
Suspension vs Permanent Ban
GTA Online has two levels of penalty, and Rockstar picks one based on how serious the violation was.
| Penalty | How long | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension | Until the date on the alert screen | Characters and progress may be reset |
| Permanent ban | No expiration date | Online access, characters and GTA$ locked |
A suspension starts the moment it is placed, and a later violation can turn it into a permanent ban. Rockstar can also skip the suspension. Its older account article says some players are banned from every Rockstar title at once, with no suspension first, for cheat development or attacks on Rockstar's services.

How Long a GTA Online Ban Lasts
A GTA Online suspension lasts until the expiration date Rockstar shows on the alert screen when it removes you from a session. The same date appears again each time you try to reconnect. Once that date passes, online play opens back up. A permanent ban has no expiration date, so it never runs out on its own.
Older guides still say every suspension lasts 30 days. Rockstar's current policy publishes no fixed length, so the alert screen is the only number that counts for your account. Mass ban sweeps work the same way: the GTA Online ban waves Rockstar has confirmed hand out the same suspensions and bans, many of them on the same day.
Not every disconnect is a ban, either. Rockstar lists conflicting software, system performance, network latency and anti-cheat detection as causes of the message "You were kicked from the session by BattlEye." Rockstar's ban policy names only two penalties, suspensions and bans, and a kick is neither of them.
What You Lose When Rockstar Acts
A GTA Online suspension may reset your characters, along with their progress, property and inventory. Rockstar's policy says "may," so a reset is possible rather than certain.
A permanent ban goes further. Rockstar says all access to its online services becomes inaccessible, including characters, progress, property, inventory and virtual currency such as GTA$, and that all of it may be reset. Rockstar's Terms of Service also allow it to bar a banned player from creating an account in the future.
Can Rockstar Ban Your PC, Not Just Your Account?
Yes. Rockstar's ban policy says its security actions "may affect your Rockstar Games account and/or your gaming system." A GTA Online penalty can sit on the machine as well as on the login.
The PC side runs through BattlEye, the kernel-level anti-cheat Rockstar added to GTA Online in a September 2024 title update. Rockstar's BattlEye FAQ lists what it monitors, including your IP address, account ID and "hardware device information and identifiers (e.g., serial numbers)." BattlEye's privacy policy adds that after a detection it may keep "hardware serial information for identification."
What neither company publishes is the exact list of identifiers behind a PC ban, or how long a machine stays flagged. So the honest answer is narrow: Rockstar can act on your gaming system, BattlEye collects the serials that make that possible, and the rest is not public.

How to Appeal a GTA Online Ban
Rockstar accepts appeals of GTA Online suspensions and bans through one form, linked from its Online Suspension and Ban Policy as rsg.ms/appeal. Some guides still quote a Rockstar line saying every decision was final, so check the date on anything you read.
- Write down the exact alert text and the expiration date, if one is shown.
- Open rsg.ms/appeal, which leads to the account section of Rockstar Support's request form.
- Pick the appeal option and fill in the details the form asks for about the ban.
- Explain briefly and factually what you were doing when it happened.
- Attach screenshots or other evidence if you have them, then wait for Rockstar Support to answer.
Don't pad it. Rockstar warns that baseless appeals, or appeals that break its Community Guidelines, can be closed or bring further action on the account.
GTA Online Bans vs FiveM Bans
A FiveM ban and a GTA Online ban come from different systems. FiveM is a multiplayer modification framework for GTA V run by Cfx.re, and Cfx.re runs its own automated anti-cheat; a detection there bans the linked account from both FiveM and RedM. Rockstar's BattlEye FAQ says official Rockstar community roleplay servers don't need BattlEye at all.
So a ban message inside FiveM is a Cfx.re or server decision, and its appeal goes to Cfx.re support, not to Rockstar. For the details, including how FiveM's own hardware bans work, treat it as a separate case from your Rockstar account.
What an HWID Spoofer Fixes and What It Doesn't
An HWID spoofer swaps the serial numbers and IDs a Windows PC reports to games and anti-cheats, for example the serials of its disks, motherboard and network adapter. What an HWID spoofer rewrites decides what it can help with, and the limits are firm.
- It cannot restore a suspended or banned Rockstar Games account.
- It cannot bring back reset characters, property or GTA$.
- It does not shorten a suspension or replace an appeal.
- It can clear a ban that sits on the PC itself, so the machine stops matching the flagged hardware.
Appeal first if you think the ban was a mistake, because that is the only route that returns the account. If Rockstar's action also reached your gaming system, Saturn's GTA 5 HWID spoofer covers GTA V through its BattlEye product, with FiveM included in the same license. It offers two modes, temporary and permanent: in temporary mode your real IDs return the moment you quit Saturn, and permanent mode rewrites them once and keeps a single profile. You can test it free for 24 hours, and Saturn asks for an email, not a card.
Using any new account after a ban is your own call. Rockstar's terms list getting around its access controls as a violation, and they let Rockstar block future accounts.

GTA Online Ban FAQ
How can I tell if Rockstar banned me in GTA Online?
Rockstar removes you from the session and shows an alert screen. A suspension alert includes an expiration date. A permanent ban carries no expiration date. A message saying BattlEye kicked you is a kick, not a ban.
Is a GTA Online ban permanent?
Only a permanent ban is. A GTA Online suspension ends on the date shown on the alert screen, while a ban has no expiration date. A new violation after a suspension can lead to a permanent ban.
Does a GTA Online ban affect Story Mode?
No. Rockstar's penalties cover its online services, and Rockstar's BattlEye FAQ says BattlEye only has to run for online play. Story Mode stays playable, and the launcher lets you turn BattlEye off for it.
Does a GTA Online ban carry over to Red Dead Online?
It can. A suspension or ban may cover one or more of Rockstar's online services, and for cheat development or attacks on its services Rockstar can ban an account from all of its titles at once.
Can you get unbanned from GTA Online?
Yes, through Rockstar's appeal form, if Rockstar agrees the ban was wrong. In the GTA Online BattlEye FAQ, Rockstar ties BattlEye findings to its Terms of Service and Community Guidelines, so the appeal is where you explain why the action was a mistake.
