A GTA Online ban wave is a batch of suspensions, bans and money removals that Rockstar Games hands out at the same time, instead of one account at a time. Rockstar has put its own name to 5 rounds of this kind of enforcement since June 15, 2015. The most recent is a 2025 player survey in which Rockstar reported a "wide-scale removal" of accounts with inflated rank or illegitimate GTA$, a few months after the BattlEye sweeps it described in October 2024.
Plenty of other waves get talked about on YouTube, TikTok and Reddit, and some of them never happened. This record keeps the two apart. Rockstar-confirmed means Rockstar said it in a Newswire post, a support page or a player survey; everything else goes in the reported table. Counts appear only where Rockstar gave one.
What Is a GTA Online Ban Wave?
A GTA Online ban wave is a period when many accounts are hit at once, usually after Rockstar improves its detection or closes an exploit. The action depends on what each account did. Some players lose illegitimate GTA$ and RP, some get a suspension with a character reset, and repeat or serious cases get a permanent ban.
The term is the community's, not Rockstar's. Rockstar's own pages talk about "security sweeps," "disciplinary action" and the "removal" of illegitimate money. When players notice a spike of alert screens and ban emails on the same day, they call it a wave.

GTA Online Ban Waves Confirmed by Rockstar
Rockstar Games confirmed each of these rounds of GTA Online enforcement in its own words, and the last column shows where.
| When | What Rockstar said | Where |
|---|---|---|
| June 15, 2015 | New systems to detect players running mods and cheat programs | Rockstar Newswire |
| October 2016 | Illegitimately gained money removed from shared banks | Rockstar Support |
| July 24, 2020 | Action on hundreds of thousands of players so far that year | Rockstar Newswire |
| September and October 2024 | BattlEye added on PC, then security sweeps and restored accounts | Title update notes, Rockstar Support |
| Early 2025 | A wide-scale removal of accounts with inflated rank or illegitimate GTA$ | Rockstar player survey |
The June 2015 Newswire post warned that tampering with GTA Online through mods, scripts or edited game files would lead to "time in the cheater pool, bans and potential suspension." The October 2016 support page, quoted by Kotaku at the time, said Rockstar had "removed illegitimately gained in-game money from player accounts," and it came with a stricter suspension policy that resets a suspended player's progress, property and inventory.
The 2020 figure is the only Rockstar enforcement count for GTA Online we could find, and it is shared with Red Dead Online. The July 24, 2020 Newswire post said Rockstar had acted on "hundreds of thousands of players caught violating community rules across both games." We found no Rockstar total for any single wave.
The 2024 round is the best documented. Rockstar's title update notes list "Integrated BattlEye Anti-Cheat for GTA Online" on September 17, 2024. Players then reported a wave against people trying to get around it in late September. In October 2024, a Rockstar support article said "bad actors" had tried to bypass its security measures and that its "security sweeps" had caught some legitimate accounts too. RockstarINTEL quoted that article word for word, and Rockstar has since taken it down. The 2025 line comes from a survey Rockstar sent to players by email, which RockstarINTEL published in February 2025.
Ban Waves Reported but Never Confirmed
These GTA Online waves were reported by players or the press, but Rockstar never described them in its own words. Some were real ban spikes that Rockstar stayed silent on. At least one was a rumor that never happened.
| When | What was reported | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| May 2015 | Two-week bans for cheat engines and DLL injectors | GTA BOOM |
| December 2016 | A ban spike during a holiday sale, with false-ban claims | GTA BOOM |
| March 2018 | A wave players dated to March 23 | |
| July 2021 | A TikTok rumor of a wave that did not arrive | ComicBook, DualShockers |
| March 2024 | Bans for an account duplication glitch | Game Rant |
| January 2026 | Bans over offensive Mission Creator jobs | Reddit, Sportskeeda |
The July 2021 case is a warning about trusting clips. ComicBook and DualShockers both noted that Rockstar had not commented, and ComicBook reported that the day the clips named passed without one.

Why Rockstar Bans in Waves
Rockstar has never published why it groups GTA Online bans into waves. What it has said is narrower. In 2015 it described "new systems" that detect cheat programs "more efficiently," and its support site says it "routinely" runs security sweeps for illegitimate GTA$ and adjusted RP levels. A sweep catches every account that matches at once, which is what players see as a wave.
Other publishers say more about their timing. Riot, for example, holds Valorant detections back so cheat makers can't tell which build got caught, and Riot publishes its Valorant ban wave counts with dates. Rockstar does neither for GTA Online, so any "real reason" video is a guess.
Is There a GTA Online Ban Wave in 2026?
Rockstar Games has made no announcement of a GTA Online ban wave in 2026 that we could find, as of October 9, 2026. The only 2026 reports came in January, when players on Reddit said accounts had been banned after offensive custom missions spread through the new Mission Creator. We found no Rockstar statement on it.
That does not mean nothing happens between waves. Rockstar's support page says it routinely sweeps accounts for illegitimate GTA$ and RP, so corrections can land on any day without an announcement. Some AI answers move the September 26, 2024 wave into 2026. The Steam thread they cite is dated October 2024.
Who Gets Caught in a GTA Online Ban Wave?
Rockstar's own wording points at the same groups each time:
- Players running mod menus, scripts or other cheat programs
- Accounts holding GTA$ or RP from exploits, money lobbies, or cheaters who added it to other players
- Accounts that were boosted or put through account "recovery"
- Players trying to get around BattlEye on PC
Money bought with Shark Cards is treated differently. Rockstar said so in 2016, and its current support article still says GTA$ purchased through Shark Cards stays on the account during an illegitimate money removal.
Caught in a Ban Wave by Mistake?
Innocent players do get caught in GTA Online ban waves, and Rockstar has said so itself. In October 2024 it wrote that "some legitimate player accounts were inadvertently affected" by its sweeps, that it had restored those accounts and emailed each player, and that bans stayed in place for anyone who got no email.
If you think a wave hit you by mistake, the route is Rockstar's appeal form, and the suspension rules, ban lengths and appeal route for GTA Online apply to wave bans exactly as they do to any other. Appeal before you do anything else, because an appeal is the only way to get the account back.
Ban Waves and Your PC
On PC, a GTA Online ban wave can reach further than the account. Since September 2024 the game has run BattlEye, which Rockstar runs at kernel level on PC and which collects hardware serial numbers among other device data, and Rockstar's ban policy covers the gaming system as well as the Rockstar Games account. Rockstar's March 2025 PC upgrade post also lists "kernel-based anti-cheat protections" among its GTA Online changes.
If a wave left your PC blocked as well as the account, Saturn's HWID spoofer for GTA 5 works on that machine-level part. It changes the hardware IDs Windows reports, through Saturn's BattlEye product, which also covers FiveM. You can pick a temporary or a permanent spoofing mode, and you can run it for 24 hours on Saturn's free trial, where signing up takes an email but no card. Saturn cannot bring back a banned account, its characters or its GTA$.

GTA Online Ban Wave FAQ
Does Rockstar announce GTA Online ban waves?
Rarely. Rockstar named its enforcement in a June 2015 Newswire post, a July 2020 Newswire post, a 2016 support page and an October 2024 support page. Most waves players talk about were never announced.
How many players has Rockstar banned in GTA Online?
Rockstar has published one figure: on July 24, 2020, it said it had acted on "hundreds of thousands of players" that year across GTA Online and Red Dead Online. We found no Rockstar count for any single wave.
How do I know if a ban wave hit my account?
You get pulled out of the session and an alert screen appears. For a suspension it lists an end date, while a permanent ban has none. Players in the 2024 wave also reported ban emails.
Do ban waves take Shark Card money?
No. Rockstar's support article says GTA$ purchased via Shark Cards remains on the account and is not affected when illegitimate money is removed. A suspension or ban can still reset or lock everything on the account.
Can a GTA Online ban wave ban my PC?
It can on PC. Rockstar's ban policy says its actions may affect your account, your gaming system or both, and BattlEye reads hardware serial numbers. Rockstar does not publish which identifiers a PC ban uses.
